Make Better Business Decisions
Do you know why you do what you do?
You think you make decisions based on features and benefits but we actually decide based on your emotions, feelings and trust.
You will be able to better navigate the business community when you acknowledge things at work are going to make you emotional, and you choose to understand where the emotions come from.
The reality is humans are not robots so we are going to make decisions based on our emotions. We rarely make decisions based on rational common sense. Why do you think people get married? It’s most certainly a decision based on the emotional feeling of love… not based on rational thinking.
If your decisions at work are going to be based on emotions then you better have a good check on WHY you have those emotions. Does this make sense?Emotions get hi-jacked when we’re not aware of:
where they point to (blame or curiosity)
what they’re grounded in (a belief or story you hold onto)
Let’s understand the role our brain plays in decisions because it’s counter-intuitive to what you might think.
Simon Sinek’s You Tube talk about How Great Leaders Inspire Action he explains the two parts of the brain:
Neo Cortex (outer ring) = Makes up the rational & analytical part of the brain. When we communicate from the outside ring it’s about features and benefits.
Limbic Brain (middle two circles) = Makes up feelings and trust part of the brain.
When we behave from these inner circles it is all decision making with our emotions.
Emotions get a bad wrap.
We think we’re not allowed to have them, especially negative ones so we:
avoid them
react to them
blame others for them.
By the way, those are not good tactics in business for decision making. Having a wide range of emotions is not only okay, it's healthy. This means having uncomfortable or negative emotions are equally important as positive and feel good emotions.
The first step to understanding where your emotions come from is to figure out the Thought that is causing that negative, positive or neutral emotion. You raise your EQ skills when you are more self aware of your emotions and where they come from. And in turn you make better & inspiring business decisions.
